Blackberry Playbook, the very first venture for the Canadian company out into the tablet world, had some of the most hype going into the CES 2011 show. After all, for a company that has spent the last 2 years stuck in the past, it’s good to see RIM starting to branch out and embrace the actual future.
So I was excited to have a go at the Blackberry Playbook and play around with the brand new never-before-used QNX OS that Blackberry has invested so much into setting up. And I think it looks great, after using it for a few minutes. And much like the Motorola Xoom, the Playbook is definitely drool-worthy: dual-core 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, seamless multitasking, support for Flash, HTML 5 and Adobe Air, as well as dual cameras and 7″ 1024×600 capacitive touchscreen.
I loved how easy the Playbook was to carry around. It actually felt more portable than the Galaxy Tab, which is saying a lot. It felt thinner, at 10.16 mm compared to 12 mm for the Galaxy Tab. So overall it really is a smaller device, but doesn’t sacrifice screen space or functionality in the process. Needless to say, I’m definitely looking forward to playing with it more as it becomes available.
The Playbook will be available sometime in Q1 2011 as a Wi-Fi only version, and then will come to Sprint with 4G this summer.
